چکیده

This study examines the annual CO2 emissions embodied in China’s exports from 2002 to 2008 using environmental input–output analysis. Four driving forces, including emission intensity, economic production structure, export composition, and total export volume, are compared for their contributions to the increase of embodied CO2 emissions using a structural decomposition analysis (SDA) technique. Although offset by the decrease in emission intensity, the increase of embodied CO2 emissions was driven by changes of the other three factors. In particular, the change of the export composition was the largest driver, primarily due to the increasing fraction of metal products in China’s total export. Relevant policy implications and future research directions are discussed at the end of

Will Economic Restructuring in China Reduce Trade-Embodied CO2 Emissions?

We calculate CO2 emissions embodied in China’s net exports using a multi-regional input-output database. We find that the majority of China’s export-embodied CO2 is associated with production of machinery and equipment rather than energy-intensive products, such as steel and aluminum. In 2007, the largest net recipients of embodied CO2 emissions from China include the EU (360 million metric ton...

Pattern changes in determinants of Chinese emissions

The Chinese economy has been recovering slowly from the global financial crisis, but it cannot achieve the same rapid development of the pre-recession period. Instead, the country has entered a new phase of economic development—a ‘new normal’. We use a structural decomposition analysis and environmental input–output analysis to estimate the determinants of China’s carbon emission changes during...

Author's Personal Copy Trade, Production Fragmentation, and China's Carbon Dioxide Emissions

An input–output framework is adopted to estimate China’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions as generated by its exports in 2002. More than one half of China’s exports are related to international production fragmentation. These processing exports generate relatively little value added but also relatively little emissions. We argue that existing estimates of the CO2 content of China’s exports are si...

GHGs and air pollutants embodied in China’s international trade: Temporal and spatial index decomposition analysis

Temporal index decomposition analysis and spatial index decomposition analysis were applied to understand the driving forces of the emissions embodied in China's exports and net exports during 2002-2011, respectively. The accumulated emissions embodied in exports accounted for approximately 30% of the total emissions in China; although the contribution of the sectoral total emissions intensity ...

A projected turning point of China’s CO2 emissions ----an analysis of Environmental Kuznets Curve for China

This paper examines the possible existence of an Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) relationship between China’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per capita (CO2/capita) and GDP per capita (GDP/capita) in 1980-2008. The timing of the turning point in China’s CO2/capita can be further estimated if an EKC relationship exists. In regression results, a natural logarithm-quadratic relationship was foun...
